Position Assistant Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services

The assistant director supports the director as the technical advisor to the parks advisory and recreation advisory committees, as well as other related programs committees. This position is classified as exempt for the purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in parks, recreation and leisure services or related field, preferably from a national Recreation and Parks Association accredited college or university and five years of progressive experience in public park and recreation, including two years in planning and administration preferably as an assistant director or director or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience providing the knowledge, abilities and skills cited below.

Knowledge, Skills and Duties:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of administrative practices relating to parks, recreation and leisure services with knowledge of philosophy and principles of public park and recreation services.
  • Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal regulations such as PEOSHA, CPSC, public bathing codes, child care regulations, ADA, and purchasing regulations (RFPs, bids and quotes).
  • Ability to assist in analyzing operational problem areas and to make improvements.
  • Ability and previous experience to present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, through the development of policies, operations manuals and program guidelines.
  • Ability and previous experience in maintaining working relationships with the board of education and community groups (examples: Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, etc.).
  • Ability and previous experience in overseeing comprehensive youth sports programs (including league scheduling at multiple sites), day camp operations, swimming facilities (beach front operations preferred), cultural programs for visual and performing arts, and major special events.
  • Ability and previous experience in overseeing the operation of parks and recreation facilities including capital improvements, development projects and general management.
  • Ability and previous experience overseeing the purchase and specification of equipment and supplies as needed for program services.
  • Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, evaluate and direct the work of professional staff and other support employees.
  • Ability to establish budget controls, studies and surveys of all services. Understanding and experience with managing both operations budgets and capital improvement budgets.
  • Evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Must be computer literate, preferably with MS Office Suite and online registration programs, as well as social media experience in promoting programs and events.
  • Represents the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and the director on various occasions and serves on a variety of internal and external committees. Acts in the absence of the director.
  • Other related duties as needed.
