Thomas Jefferson Visits the Randolph Library
Date(s): Wednesday, September 15
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Who: No children under age 10.

In commemoration of National Constitution Day, the Randolph Library has the distinct honor of hosting Mr. Thomas Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, third president of the United States, and founder of the University of Virginia, voiced the aspirations of a new America as no other individual of his era. As public official, historian, philosopher, and plantation owner, he served his country for over five decades.

Steve Edenbo, first-person historical interpreter, portrays Jefferson as a man of 33—his age when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. After a biographical monologue, Edenbo will continue with his current method of Thomas Jefferson interpretation, “The Performance Conversation,” which allows the audience to have a dialogue with the performer. Edenbo first began to learn the art of historical interpretation from William Sommerfield of The American Historical Theatre, who taught him that the core of first-person interpretation is theater.

Please make 1 entry per person or you may not be guaranteed entry.

Tribute to Johnny Mercer

Time: 2:00 p.m.

In any poll of the finest all-time American lyricists of popular music, Johnny Mercer would rank among the Top 10, maybe even the Top 5. During his over four-decade career as a hit songwriter almost without equal, he collaborated with some of the greatest all-time composers like Harold Arlen, Richard Whiting, Hoagy Carmichael, Harry Warren, Jimmy Van Heusen, Henry Mancini and Michel Legrand, turning out dozens of wonderful standards in his more than 700 published songs (and thousands more that were not published). He received 18 nominations for an Academy Award and won four times. He was also known as a singer, with thirteen Top 10 hits including four #1 smashes.

The Sonny & Perley Duo has captivated audiences with their spontaneity, warmth, musical honesty and broad repertoire. Perley’s beautiful rich voice and Sonny’s very facile, slightly percussive keyboard work will delight the audience.

The Politics of Marriage
Date(s): Wednesday, October 6
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Join us in this lecture/debate with Professor Beth Kiyoko Jamieson, Political Science, Princeton University. Contemporary debates about same-sex marriage raise questions about the foundation of legal marriage itself. Why is the state in the marriage business? What are the connections between religious marriage and legal marriage? Is marriage a just institution? Using examples pulled from the headlines, the courtrooms, and history, we will explore the dimensions of this debate.

Professor Jamieson’s research examines the intersection of political theory, law, and gender. She is the author of “Real Choices: Feminism, Freedom, and the Limits of the Law” as well as articles and reviews on subjects such as miscegenation, private, identity, and hate speech. Her current research examines judicial constructions of gender and sexuality. She teaches undergraduate courses on law and public policy and gender and politics, and directs the Pace Center, Princeton’s campus advocate and central resource for civil engagement.
