Hands of Humanity
Date(s): Wednesday, August 26
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Morristown native, Costa “Gus” Mavraganis, leads two nonprofit organizations that help people in Third World countries to build homes and clinics, to bring clean water to villages that have almost nothing, and to tend to AIDS victims. As leader of the Cuba AIDS Project, he has brought hundreds of medical students, teenagers and adults interested in outreach to volunteer work to the area. In November, he will bring 15 volunteers to the Dominican Republic to renovate a church so that it may serve as a community center for local children. “It’s amazing what you can do with so little money,” he said. Mavraganis is also collecting old sewing machines, as well as baseball bats and gloves to take with him. Those who travel with him stay in the cities outside of the devastated areas. He gives travelers plenty of time to tour the cities and lounge on the beaches in between volunteer efforts. Come learn about this enriched travel and humanitarian experience.

Briz in Concert—“Freedom Stairway”
Date(s): Wednesday, September 2
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Adults are invited to a concert by Briz, a music composer who recently finished writing songs for a project he calls “Freedom Stairway.” The project is based on interviews conducted in the 1930s with former slaves by the United States government’s Works Progress Administration (WPA). The story revolves around the Underground Railroad, and the attempt of thousands of slaves to reach the “Freedom Stairway.” The saga is based on real people and places and some of the songs are culled directly from the slaves’ interviews. Jeff Dame of Northeast In-Tune Magazine describes Briz’s style as “...bits of classic rock, blues, and add in musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, mix them in a blender and out comes Briz.”

Nothing to Fear: FDR and the Great Depression
Date(s): Wednesday, September 23
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Back by popular demand, Dr. Raymond Frey, Professor of History at Centenary College, will retell the remarkable story of the Great Depression and a president who revolutionized our federal government and economy. The year is 1932. Almost 25% of American workers are unemployed. Industries are at a near standstill. President Herbert Hoover seems unable to get the economy moving again. People wanted change, and wanted it quickly. Franklin D. Roosevelt would defeat Hoover that year, promising “action, and action now.” The first one hundred days of FDR’s presidency saw a blizzard of legislation and new, never-before-tried government programs designed to get America back on its feet and Americans back to work. Dr. Frey will also discuss the lessons learned that might help solve our present economic crisis.
