Janet W. Foster, author of The Queen Anne House, will give a presentation on this eclectic style that lasted from 1875 to 1900. The American Queen Anne-style was the first “national” style for it was built in all regions of the country, including territories that at the time had yet to become states. The Queen Anne’s lack of “rules” made it the focus of derogatory comments from serious architects and the architectural press, but that same flexibility also made the style extremely “buildable.” The Queen Anne house is also the first to consistently include the amenities—plumbing, heating, built-in kitchens, and closets—that modern Americans take for granted as the basis for a comfortable domestic life.
