2009 Leaf Collection Program
Posted: September 17, 2009

The Public Works Department will begin the township’s annual Leaf Collection Program at the end of October.

Residents are urged to dispose of leaves on their own properties whenever possible. Blowing leaves into wooded areas, placing leaves on acid loving plants such as pachysandra, or creating backyard compost piles will have the effect of minimizing costs associated with collection of the leaves at the curbside and trucking the leaves to a compost facility outside the township limits. Such disposal in wooded areas or on acid loving plants is also beneficial to homeowners’ properties.

The state has instituted new stormwater regulations which may have the effect of eliminating our Leaf Collection Program as we have come to know it. The township currently is trying to retain its curbside collection program, but in order to meet the state’s requirements for scheduling pickups, it is necessary that the volume of leaves placed at the street be reduced.

Please note: Only residents will be permitted to place leaves at the street. Landscapers will have to pick up the leaves and dispose of them at an approved composting facility.

Residents may place loose leaves at the curb no earlier than seven days prior to their scheduled collection date.

Leaves placed at the gutter may also find their way into storm drains and ultimately into our streams and lakes during rainstorm events.

The township will be enforcing its yard waste ordinance with written warnings and summonses. The ordinance prohibits all yard waste from being placed at the curb or along the street more than seven days prior to scheduled collections. The ordinance also prohibits the placing of yard waste closer than 10 feet from any storm sewer inlet along the street. It is important that only leaves be placed in the gutter and that brush, grass, rocks or any other materials are removed to avoid damage to the leaf collection equipment.

Please try to coordinate your yard raking with the schedule which follows to avoid having leaves in the gutter for extended periods of time.

For any residents wishing to bag their leaves in biodegradable bags and place them curbside, the Department of Public Works will pick them up within a 24-hour period. This applies to bagged leaves only. Please call the Engineering Department at 973.989.7066 to be placed on the pick-up list. Plastic bags will not be collected, only biodegradable leaf bags which are available at many garden centers.
