Deer Count to be Conducted After Dark
Posted: February 21, 2012
Members of the Randolph Township Deer Control Subcommittee (RDCS) are working with a biologist from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife to conduct a deer count in Randolph.
The group conducted the first part of the count on February 15; the second session will take place on Wednesday, February 22; the third session, day to be determined, will take place on one of the days between February 27 through March 1.
To conduct the count, members of the RDCS will be driving through town during evening hours, from approximately 7:00 p.m. through 11:00 p.m., using a spotlight to count deer in various public areas throughout the township. Consequently, residents may see a slow moving van moving going at 10 mph with RDCS members shining strong, hand-held spotlights across lawns and nearby woods. They will also be using small laser instruments to accurately measure distances used in the final calculations.
The count is intended to establish a baseline number for the current deer herd to better track how deer control efforts such as the deer hunt are affecting the number of deer in the township. These numbers will then be extrapolated using a formula developed by the Division of Fish and Wildlife to give an estimated population for Randolph.
