The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The virus is airborne and easily spread from person to person, primarily when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus is also transmitted by direct hand contact.

Influenza ranks as one of the most severe illnesses of the winter season and can be life-threatening for elderly people, infants, young children and individuals with certain chronic illnesses. The single best way to prevent this illness is to get a flu vaccination each fall. The flu vaccine will NOT give you the flu. The vaccine is very safe and generally has few side effects.
