- Charged: Wilburt B. Little, age 37 of Greenville NC
At approximately 11:04 p.m. on 5-23-08, the Randolph Police received the first of three burglary calls from a resident of Center Grove Village Apartments. Within the next fifteen minutes, two additional burglaries were reported—one additional case in Center Grove Village and one on Center Grove Road. Officers Kevin Clark, Corey Czerniak, and Randy Maccione responded to the three separate burglary scenes. Subsequently assisting the initial responding officers were Sgt. Jeffrey Gomez and Morris County Sheriff’s Officers Det. Frank Perez with K-9 Niko, Det. Kelly Duane, and Det. Jamie Rae. Officer Randy Maccione advised Sgt. Gomez that at the scene of the burglary on Center Grove Road, he and Officer Czerniak had observed bicycle tracks that led from the burglary scene to parking lot #3 at the County College of Morris. Maccione reported seeing similar tracks at the burglary scene in Center Grove Village. Through the use of a night vision device, Officer Maccione was able to observe the tire tracks clearly leading toward lot #3 at CCM where the Cole Brothers Circus was set up. At this point, Det. Perez and his K-9 responded to the burglary scene and followed a track which led through the crushed vegetation left by the suspect’s bicycle. As the officers followed the track, Det. Duane observed a bicycle tire impression in the muddy ground. She took a digital photo of the tire impression. As the search continued, the officers were led to the trailers and bunkers set up by the circus in lot #3 of CCM. Three bicycles were located in the immediate area. Two of those bicycles were immediately eliminated as the suspect’s bicycle due to one having a flat tire and the other having appeared to have been stationary for a period of time due to accumulated condensation on the frame. After speaking with an employee of the circus, the officers were directed toward a bunker that housed new employees. A bicycle was located outside the bunker. The tire tread on this bicycle was compared to the digital photograph taken by Det. Duane and the two appeared to be identical. Sgt. Gomez knocked on the door of the trailer and it was eventually answered by an employee of the circus. After a brief conversation with that individual, he advised Sgt. Gomez that another employee was in the rear of the trailer. Sgt. Gomez made contact with Wilburt Little. Little was advised of the theft investigation and how the officers followed the bicycle track back to this location. Little invited Sgt. Gomez into the trailer and began to collect the items he had stolen. He turned those items over to Sgt. Gomez. Sgt. Gomez placed the accused under arrest at 4:38 a.m. on 5-24-08. Little was transported to police HQ by Officer Clark. Sgt. Gomez interviewed the accused and he admitted having committed all three of the recent burglaries. Little was charged with three counts of burglary and three counts of theft of movable property. Municipal Court Judge Ira Cohen set the accused’s bail at $30,000.00. The accused was transported to the Morris County Correctional Facility by Officer Czerniak and Sgt. Gomez. The Randolph Police acknowledge and appreciate the cooperation of the officers from the Morris County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation and eventual apprehension of the party responsible for these three burglaries.
