    The non-emergency phone number for the police department is 973.989.7010. This number is to be used for non-emergency situations, routine requests or to obtain general information.   • How do I obtain a police report?
    Police reports are available for a fee at the Records Bureau window in the police department lobby Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. More info »
  • When can I get fingerprints done?
    Fingerprinting services are available Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. No appointment is necessary but residents are asked to call 973.989.7015 first to ensure that an officer will be available to assist you.
  • What is required to obtain a handicapped parking permit?
    Handicapped parking permits (placards) are available for those who are either temporarily or permanently handicapped. Pursuant to state statute, however, the police department can only issue temporary placards. The permit is good for six months and may be renewed one time for an additional period of up to six months. You must obtain an application from the police department and meet all requirements.   • How do I make an appointment to have the installation of my child safety seat inspected?
    To make an appointment to have your child safety seat checked, call 973.989.7010, ext. 7513 and leave your name and phone number. A Certified Child Safety Seat Technician will return your call.
  • Whom do I call about tours, presentations, alarm information, home surveys and neighborhood watch programs?

  • What are the regulations regarding abandoned vehicles and “For Sale” vehicles?
    Township ordinances require all unregistered vehicles to be placed inside a garage or covered with a tarp or cover. Only one vehicle may be stored in this manner in a residential area. Only one vehicle may be displayed as “For Sale” as long as the vehicle is stored on the property of the registered owner.
  • How soon after a snowfall must I remove snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of my property?
    Township ordinances require that snow/ice be removed from sidewalks listed in the “Designated Walking Routes” within 12 hours of daylight after any snowfall or accumulation of ice occurs.
  • Can I park my vehicle on the street overnight? What about when snow is falling?
    Parking on the street is prohibited between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. every night and at all times when snow is falling. At the discretion of the police department, requests for temporary overnight parking may be granted. Residents must call the department at 973.989.7000 and speak with the dispatcher. Do not leave a message in an officer’s voice mailbox.
  • I have a friend who is using drugs and I am concerned that something bad will happen. What can I do to get this person help without him/her finding out I was the one who intervened?
    If you want to help your friend, call the Community Action Line at 973.989.7007. This is a 24-hour anonymous hotline without Caller ID established just for this purpose. If you care enough to call, you could help save someone’s life. After all, that’s what friends are for, isn’t it?
  • If I install a home security system, is a permit required?
    Yes. All residential and business alarm systems must be registered with the police department. More info »
  • Does the department still offer free gunlocks?
    Yes. In partnership with Project ChildSafe, we distribute free firearm safety kits to registered owners of firearms. Each kit contains a safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock. The lock fits on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. To obtain a safety kit, contact Sgt. Garry Moore at 973.537.7112.
