Open Space: About
In January of 2010, the responsibilities of the Open Space Committee were transferred to the Environmental Commission.
In 1992, Randolph Township voters overwhelmingly supported a ballot referendum to establish a local Open Space Trust Fund. This partnership between local residents, municipal leaders, and the township’s professional staff resulted in the preservation of over one thousand acres of land throughout the township. Randolph preserved land for wonderful parks, natural areas, and trails. A highlight of the program was the permanent protection of the Clyde Potts Reservoir and its surrounding watershed, a regional resource for drinking water.
This could not have been accomplished without the local Open Space Trust Fund. The strength of the preservation program was the ability to match these very important funds with grants from the Morris County Open Space Trust Fund, New Jersey Green Acres Program, Morris County Park Commission, and local utility authorities. Leveraging limited dollars expanded purchasing power and enhanced opportunities to preserve land.
The Open Space Advisory Committee worked closely with the Township Council and Manager’s Office to design and produce signs to permanently mark these municipal lands that were funded by Randolph’s Open Space Trust Fund. Residents can easily find these signs posted at Freedom Park on Millbrook Avenue and Hidden Valley Park on Everdale Road, to name just a few.
