[ARCHIVED] Beware of Planting Invasive Species

japanese knotweed leaves

Beware of planting invasive species, they spread and disrupt natural ecological processes.  It isn’t always easy to initially identify these “problem plants” as some are readily available to purchase.  To know what to avoid, Rutgers Cooperative Extension Agent, Jean Epiphan, of Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Morris County, recommends to start with the identification of the plants you already have growing in your yard.   If you notice you have “problem plants”, including plants that may be spreading and difficult to remove, you can refer to Rutgers Cooperative Extension for managing these invasive weeds.   Residents can call the Rutgers Master Gardener of Morris County Helpline at 973-285-8305 or email rcehelpline@co.morris.nj.us for assistance to help with identifying types and classifications of plants growing in your yard, as well as learn about native alternatives.

An example of an invasive species is the Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum syn. Fallopia japonica, pictured herein); it may look lovely as a yard accent, but this invasive plant is at the root of a growing problem. This species and other types of foreign invasive plants spread from your garden and can end up everywhere and disrupt natural ecological processes. Rutgers experts urge homeowners to avoid these invasive plants and instead landscape with native species.
