Message from the Mayor

Dear Randolph Residents,
I hope you are staying strong as we continue to face the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Sunday, the U.S. Surgeon General predicted that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic this week would be the “hardest and the saddest” for us, describing it as a “Pearl Harbor moment” and a “9/11 moment” for our country. In Randolph, we have continued to see an increasing number of our residents infected with the virus. As of today, we have had 129 Randolph residents test positive for the virus after exhibiting symptoms, and we expect that number to continue to increase for some time. Sadly, 2 residents infected with the virus have passed away and 15 others currently remain hospitalized. We hope that soon we can also begin reporting the number of individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 infection.
Our healthcare professionals continue to demonstrate dedication and heroism as they work each day to provide medical care for the sick. Others in our community, who continue to work in “essential” jobs that benefit all of us, are also taking risks each day. Without these individuals, it would be difficult for us to get food, medical care and other essential services. In contrast, the rest of us are being asked to do our part by staying home and social distancing. It sounds easy, but we know it’s not. None of us like being confined to our homes, but we need to do our part to protect ourselves and our community. Social distancing continues to be the most effective way to slow the spread of COVID-19. Please stay home. If you have to go out, please stay at least 6 feet away from others.
While the majority of people in Randolph are doing their part, I have heard concerns from community members who worry that social distancing guidelines are not being followed. They observe groups gathering in neighborhoods and they are concerned. This week, public health officials in New York and New Jersey expressed some optimism. They said there is evidence to suggest that mitigation efforts are working based on data that indicate a slowing of infection rates. This is certainly good news, although we will need more time before this can be confirmed. So, please let’s all hang in there and continue to follow the social distancing guidelines.
Throughout this public health crisis, Randolph Township continues to run smoothly. Even though all township buildings have been closed to the public, the staff continues to work and provide critical services. Residents needing to reach township staff are asked to call or email the relevant department to conduct any necessary business transactions without visiting municipal offices.
The township trails remain open. They are more popular than ever and being used increasingly by residents. However, all park facilities have been closed in order to reduce group gatherings and facilitate social distancing. When using the trails, please continue to keep your distance from others.
Although the Randolph Library is closed to the public, book clubs and children’s storytime are being offered virtually. There is unprecedented growth in the number of digital books being borrowed. The staff has increased the number of digital titles they are buying in order for Randolph residents to have a larger selection and reduced wait times. It’s great to see these library resources being used to help get us through these times.
The recycling center remains open, and curbside pickup of garbage and recyclables continues as scheduled.
